A few years ago, coffee cups were almost an afterthought.

They were a necessity, rather than something that could be used to elevate the experience.

Fortunately, that is not the case any longer. Most coffee folks have come to the same conclusion as wine connoisseurs; what you drink from is almost as important as what you drink!

And with something as beautiful and intense as espresso, you definitely don’t want to compromise on the aesthetic experience.

I tested a bunch of different cups and glasses specifically designed with espresso in mind, and here are some of my favorites.

Of course, it’s nice if a cup can also work for a cortado, but that has only been a secondary criterion in this guide.

The best espresso cups in my humble opinion

1: KRUVE PROPEL Espresso Glass

The Kruve EQ Propel Espresso cup makes a bold statement with its almost gaudy appearance.

However, once in hand, you’ll appreciate the well-designed form and function.

I was skeptical as well, but was won over after taking my first couple of sips!

These cups are enjoyable to drink from and offer a lot of head space for extra appreciation of the aroma.

One standout feature of the cup is the integrated propel fins from which the cup borrows its name; these fins help agitate the espresso shot.

Surprisingly effective, the fins eliminate the need for a spoon to stir your espresso.

The cup’s volume is perfectly suited for modern double shots in the 45 to 60 ml range with the upper part of the glass allowing extra room for swirling and inhaling the aroma of the shot.

Overall, the Kruve EQ Propel Espresso cup is more than just a gimmick. It’s a dedicated espresso vessel that truly excels in design and utility, elevating the whole espresso ritual.

2: FELLOW MONTY CORTADO CUPS

fellow monty

Fellow produces elegant, well-designed, and somewhat pricey coffee equipment.

The Fellow Monty Cup is no exception, featuring sleek lines, a striking black color, and a considerable price tag.

The Monty is available in a range of sizes. This one here is the Cortado version, which is designed to accommodate smaller milk-based drinks as well as long espressos or lungos.

It provides ample space for a regular 45 ml espresso shot, allowing for swirling and inhaling the aromas of your shot.

There is also an even smaller “demitasse” version of the Monty specifically designed for espresso, but I prefer the flexibility of this size.

The cup’s bottom is curved to facilitate better latte art pouring, but some may find the opening a bit narrow for latte art.

In terms of appearance, although luxurious in the hand, I’m not 100% in love with Monty’s blackish color. Luckily, you can get it in white.

The cup has a graphite base (which feels more like plastic) that contrasts with the ceramic upper portion. The double-walled ceramic construction helps ensure that the mug’s outside remains cool to the touch.

Overall, the Fellow Monty is a versatile and modern espresso mug, particularly for those looking for a chic option that also works for smaller milk-based drinks.

3: Kinto kronos

kinto cronos

The Kinto Cronos espresso cup may initially remind you of the Kruve Propel, but it lacks the same “wow factor” in daily use.

While the shots look appealing and the double-walled glass provides a comfortable grip, the design doesn’t allow for swirling your espresso and the same level of degustation as the Propel.

The Kinto Cronos, however, is elegant and could function as more than just an espresso cup.

It can also be used for green tea or a small glass of dessert wine, making it a practical addition to your glassware collection.

Overall, the Kinto Cronos espresso cup is a beautiful, if somewhat unremarkable, double-walled glass option but may not be the top choice for true espresso aficionados.

4: Coffeezone Barista Speciality Coffee Cup

Coffeezone, a relatively obscure brand, offers its cups (and saucers) in a wide range of vibrant colors and sizes.

These cups have a premium, hefty feel in the hand, with no unnecessary frills. They embody a classic, solid design that has stood the test of time.

The smallest size is suitable for espresso and equally works well for flat whites and cappuccinos.

It might be controversial, but when comparing these cups to those from more expensive brands such as ACME and Loveramics, it’s hard to discern any significant differences.

For those who appreciate the classic coffee cup style and are seeking an affordable option, the Barista Speciality Coffee Cup is a solid choice.

By the way, these cups are also great if you just want to sip on a regular black coffee.

5: Loveramics Espresso Cup

Loveramics graces the countertops of numerous coffee shops with their colorful cups.

Though their offerings come with a premium price tag, the dedicated espresso cup—crafted from weighty, top-notch ceramic— is actually a dedicated espresso cup.

Unlike the cortado cup from Coffeezone, Loveramics has a cup that is designed specifically for espresso. That means a smaller volume and a unique shape.

Drinking from the cup offers a classic, familiar feeling. However, it is worth noting that you’ll need a spoon to stir your shot if you want to be sure that all solids are mixed in.

The ergonomic handle and egg shape give the cup a sense of security and balance in hand. Saucers are included for that classic European cafe style.

Loveramics’ cups are extremely temperature resistant and can go in the dishwasher and microwave.

With a good blend of style, function, and durability, the Loveramics Espresso Cup is an option that will never go out of style.

6: Kinto CAST 8439 Espresso Cup

The Kinto Cast Espresso Cup is a stylish and playful option for those who appreciate unique designs.

Kinto is known for creating interesting products, and this espresso cup is no exception.

Despite its name, the “cast” cup feels rather light, which might come as a surprise to some. It is a small cup with limited room for swirling your espresso.

However, its distinct design sets it apart from other espresso cups and can help draw you into the moment as you enjoy your coffee.

While there are other impressive cups and glasses in Kinto’s CAST series, such as the amber coffee mug, this particular espresso cup might be considered just above average.

For design-savvy individuals who value the playful style and can secure the cup at a competitive price, this cup could make a solid addition to their espresso station.
