Shardor Grinder Review: Janky, But Delicious

The Shardor is by far the cheapest ticket into 64mm flat burr land. So what’s the catch?

There’s a food show on Netflix called Ugly Delicious, where David Chang makes a case that some of the world’s tastiest food isn’t found in fine dining restaurants. Instead, it’s the steamed dumpling from a back alley in China, or the quick snack from a street vendor somewhere in Texas. Food that looks rough, but beats the fancy tasting menu.

I kept thinking about that show while testing the so-called “Shardor.”

Because this grinder sure is janky. It’s plasticky, it’s loud, and some people would even say ugly. Few folks are putting this thing on a coffee bar for the Instagram photos.

But hiding inside that unglamorous shell is something that, with the right treatment, produces coffee I’d happily put up against grinders costing five to six times as much.

Janky but delicious. That’s the review in three words. Now let me give you the full backstory.

Not long ago, getting 64mm flat burrs at home meant hunting down a used commercial Mazzer Super Jolly and modding it.

Then the DF64 came around and disrupted that whole 64 mm landscape. Sudenly everyone could get DF64 for what was considered relatively cheap back in 2021.

That changed very recently when the Shardor showed up out of nowhere, and once again disrupted the whole market.

This grinder has been making waves as possibly the most affordable 64 mm grinder in recorded human history.

So is this the budget breakthrough the grinder that the world has been waiting for?

Well… I’m conflicted.

Out of the box, I don’t think it’s a fantastic grinder. But install the right burrs, and it turns into something that surprised even me. More on that discovery later.

  • Cheap look and feel: Plastic construction, coffee bean icons, unfortunate name
  • Upgrade math: Good burrs cost more than the grinder itself

About the Brand

Shardor is not exactly a household name in specialty coffee. And I’ll be honest: the name itself is a bit unfortunate. I suspect some Americans will get associations that go in a slightly… toilet-adjacent direction. Not ideal branding.

It also commits one of my personal design sins: using coffee beans as icons on the machine. I hate that. It’s the coffee equipment equivalent of a pizzeria with a cartoon chef kissing his fingers.

The truth is, this is an OEM product rather than something that’s conceived and crafted by a real coffee brand. You’ll see the exact same grinder pop up under different names around the internet, sometimes with a different body, but mechanically identical. That’s worth knowing, both for shopping around and (as we’ll get to) for the long-term parts situation.

The model I tested is the “standard Shardor” in the 220V version.

I actually borrowed it from a friend who loves this grinder so much he imported a handful of them.

I tested it for around three months, and while I was traveling for part of that time, I did put a decent amount of beans through it for both pour over and espresso. I also tore it completely apart to inspect the motor and internals.

Design and Build Quality

Let’s not sugarcoat it: this is a plastic grinder. It weighs around 3 kilos, roughly half of a DF64, and you can feel exactly where the money wasn’t spent.

The whole thing looks a little bit cheap on the counter, and when it runs, the plastic body produces a hollow, rattly sound rather than the reassuring hum of a well-dampened machine. It reminds me of how the Baratza Encore sound. Not insanely loud. But still pretty loud. And not pleasant.

To put some numbers on it: with just the motor running and no beans, the Shardor measures around 76 to 78 decibels. For comparison, the DF54 sits at 60 to 62 decibels under the same conditions. That’s a significant gap. However, when actually grinding beans the sound is more similar.

I tore it completely apart. The inside is neater than the outside suggests.

Here’s the thing, though. When I opened it up, the inside was actually neatly organized. And the parts that actually touch your coffee are metal: a full metal grinding chamber and burr carrier housing a set of 64mm flat burrs.

The adjustment collar is stepless, marked 0 to 100 with brew-method labels, and threads on brass, so there’s no drift once you’ve set it. There’s also a sensible safety interlock that prevents the motor from running with the chamber open, and the chute attaches magnetically, which makes cleaning easy.

So the engineering priorities are actually correct. Cheap where it doesn’t matter, metal where it does. I just wish the execution around the edges was better.

Daily Workflow

The touchscreen gives you two programmable timed doses plus a manual mode, and honestly, the time dosing is a nice feature at this price. If you’re pulling espresso regularly, being able to dial in a grind time and hit one button is convenient.

However, it’s also possible to just push the catch cup in against the front button and it grinds while you hold it.

You can grind directly into a portafilter using the included fork, but I never grind that way (I always use a catch cup, since it’s simply better for consistent dosing.)

Which brings me to my biggest daily annoyance: the catch cup situation.

The cup itself is fine, a common steel cup you’ll recognize from AliExpress and various other grinders. But the platform it sits on is genuinely bad.

The cup rattles around on top of it, the thin rubber mat slides all over the place, and nothing mitigates vibrations. You end up babysitting the grinder while it runs, keeping an eye on the cup like it might make a break for it.

On the plus side, exchanged retention is impressively low. Using the bellows, what you put in is essentially what you get out, and when I emptied the grind chamber completely, I only recovered 0.5 grams of permanent retention (stuck in nooks and crannies). That’s a great number for any grinder, let alone one at this price.

You also get both the full 250g hopper with built-in bellows and a separate, smaller single-dose bellows that keeps the footprint compact. A spritz of RDT on your beans handles the static that the plastic body would otherwise generate.

The Stock Burrs: Here’s the Problem

Now for the uncomfortable part.

The stock burrs are underwhelming. I’d describe the cup character as a little gritty and muddy, without any much focus. Not really anything to write home about, for either filter or espresso.

And this matters, because the whole allure of this grinder is “64mm flat burrs at bargain price!”

But from my tasting, the stock setup isn’t as good as a DF64, a DF54, or even the Baratza Encore ESP, for either brew method.

It might technically be a set of 64mm flat burrs, but it doesn’t perform like a good set of 64mm flat burrs. There’s a difference.

If you were hoping to buy this, use it as-is, and unlock that mythical flat burr clarity everyone talks about online, I have to stop you right there. That’s not what’s in this box.

One odd detail I should mention: Despite the low motor RPM, the Shardor is relatively fast with the stock burrs.

That’s because the stock geometry is very aggressive, so throughput is excellent. You can expect around 2 grams per second at espresso settings, depending on the exact grind setting. A 20-gram dose is done in about 10 seconds, and at filter coarse it’s even quicker, roughly 15 grams in 5 to 6 seconds.

But keep that word “aggressive” in mind, because it explains both the speed and the muddiness.

The 500 RPM Surprise

So why am I conflicted instead of just disappointed? Because of what happened when I swapped the burrs.

The Shardor spins at roughly 500 RPM. For context, a DF64 runs at around 1400 RPM. Lower speeds generally mean fewer fines and, with the right burrs, a cleaner cup. I’ve experimented plenty with RPM on grinders that let you adjust it, but this grinder forced me to run burrs at 500 RPM whether I wanted to or not.

First I installed a set of SSP Brew burrs and the pour over results were good.

To put that in context: I’ve used these burrs in other grinders, including auger-fed models with RPM control, and those setups still produce better results. But comparing like for like, I’d say the Brew burrs taste a little better here at 500 RPM than they do at 1400 RPM in the DF64. They are actually very nice in both setups, but a bit more clear and glass-like here.

Neither would be my favorite home for these burrs (that would be an auger-fed grinder with RPM control), but that’s a high standard.

Then I put in the SSP Cast burrs (also known as the Lab Sweet 64mm V2), and this is where things got interesting. I had never run these particular burrs for espresso at 500 RPM before. It turns out they’re just really tasty at that lower speed. I’ve previously always stated that this burr set is not very good for espresso, that it should mostly be seen as a pour over focused burr set.

But the shots were fantastic. They were sweet, composed, and honestly much better than expected. I was super impressed. Both with this particular burr set, but also with the grinder.

I hadn’t done any alignment work. No paper shims, no foil tricks. I got very good performance from both burr sets straight away, which is not something I can say about every budget grinder in this category.

Burrs are a tricky subject where it can be hard to say anything with complete certainty. There are burr sets that seem to favor higher RPM’s than 500. But if the only alternative is between the standard 1400 RPM and the lower number of the Shardor, then I have to say I would take the this grinder just for the flavor quality.

It goes without saying that variable RPM would be superior, but that also means looking at a price range at least three times higher.

The trade-off is speed. With the SSP burrs installed, grinding becomes much slower, since you lose that aggressive stock geometry. For example, with SSP HU burrs grinding a 16 dose can take around 50 seconds.

Heads up! One thing to be aware of when you swap burrs: the zero point moves. When I installed the SSP HU burrs, my new zero point was around 26 on the dial, which also means the printed brew-method ranges on the collar no longer apply.

It’s not a big deal in practice. You just have to remember your new zero and count from there. But if you’re a bit OCD about your grinder markings, it might annoy you.

The swap itself is very easy. You unscrew the collar, take out the spring-loaded carrier, and remove the burr screws with a screwdriver or hex key (depending on which screws your unit shipped with). Then you install the new set.

The one thing to be careful about: there’s enough play in the screw holes that the burrs can sit slightly off-center. Take your time and make sure they’re properly centered before you tighten everything down.

You can go either single dose or hopper-based. Note that the hopper also has built-in bellows.

The Math Problem

So the grinder is great with SSP’s thrown in. That’s been clear in my testing. But here’s where the value proposition gets weird, so let’s do the math together.

The grinder itself costs less than SSP burrs. So you have to factor in that cost as well .

Suddenly your “budget” setup costs $350-plus, and you’re still left holding a loud, plastic machine with a rattly catch cup and a name that makes native English speakers giggle.

There are of course cheaper options. Lebrew burrs come to mind. And there are other 64mm sets out there for less.

The 64mm format is the most common burr size in the industry, which is exactly what makes this grinder interesting as a platform.

But you have to be honest with yourself about which buyer you are before the math makes sense.

Shardor vs DF64?

Since this is the comparison most people will be weighing, let’s tackle it head-on.

The DF64 is constructed in a sturdier way. I know people who have run them in commercial settings, so they can take a real beating. The Shardor is flimsier, though likely totally okay for home use.

The bigger difference is workflow. The Shardor is envisioned as a hopper-based grinder: it has the timed dosing, and it’s built to grind directly into a portafilter. That can actually be a real convenient workflow if you don’t want to be single-dosing.

The DF64 crowd typically measures out beans on a scale and grinds into a catch cup instead.

That said, if you want to single dose, the Shardor does that just as well. On retention, I don’t think it’s any worse than the DF64.

Then there’s the big one: burr swaps. One spins at 1400 RPM, the other at 500 RPM, and those are two different ends of the spectrum. Some burrs are simply better off in the DF64 due to workflow. The SSP HU burrs, for instance, are painfully slow in the Shardor and a bit more sour than I like. On the other hand, they are pretty fast and tasty in the DF64. So if you want HU burrs for top-notch espresso, the DF64 is the way to go.

On the other hand, the SSP Cast burrs are much better in the Shardor to my taste. A bit slow, sure, but the flavor quality is noticeably better at 500 RPM.

So neither is perfect. It really depends on which burrs you’re planning to run and how you like to work. And then there’s the price: the Shardor is usually around half the cost of a DF64. Given that, I can definitely see why people would go this route.

Who Is This Actually For?

After three months, I think there are two people who should buy this grinder.

The entry-level espresso beginner with upgrade dreams. It’s so affordable that you can start here, live with the stock burrs, and drop in a better set later when the upgrade itch strikes. My friend who imported several of these mostly drinks milk-based espresso, and for that use case (fast grinding, forgiving drinks) it does a perfectly fine job as-is.

The burr collector. If you already own a few 64mm grinders and have a spare burr set sitting in a drawer with nowhere to live, this is the single most affordable way to put it to work. Bonus: it houses them at 500 RPM, which most budget grinders can’t offer.

And who should skip it? If you’re getting into coffee as a hobby and you want nice equipment that’s going to last and look good doing it, I’d point you elsewhere.

The DF54 is smaller, much better built, better for both espresso and filter out of the box, and nicer looking.

Even the Baratza Encore ESP, which I’ve never been in love with, makes a more sensible case for the out-of-the-box buyer.

On durability: I’m less worried than you might expect. The plastic body won’t shorten its lifespan for home use, and the metal grinding chamber is a big plus. Shardor itself probably won’t be there to support you in three years, but because this is an OEM design sold under multiple names, parts are likely to remain sourceable. You’re not walking into a completely blind alley.

One practical note on support: if you buy it from Amazon, you’re usually in a pretty good position if any issues come up. The same can’t be said if you import from various Chinese sites, where you’re largely on your own.

Final Verdict: A Tinkerer’s Bargain

So, after all that, here’s my confession: I gave the borrowed unit back to my friend… and then ordered one for myself. (A version under a different name with a slightly different body, but the same machine underneath.)

Why? Because that 500 RPM motor is a really interesting home for some of the burr sets I have lying around, the light body is handy in my testing space, and the timed dosing fills a gap in my lineup (the only other grinder I have with this feature is Eureka Specialita).

So for a coffee geek, this thing is quietly excellent value.

But notice what convinced me: everything except the grinder’s own out-of-the-box performance.

That’s the Shardor in a nutshell. As a finished product, it’s a budget flat burr grinder with serious compromises. As a platform, it’s a tinkerer’s dream, because it’s the cheapest 64mm burr chassis on the market and it’s spinning at a speed that’s actually great.

Janky but delicious seems like a fitting catch phrase for this grinder.
